Compare Luminaries: FLIC vs. Paper & Plastic Luminarias

Not all luminaries are built the same. Traditional paper-bag luminarias can create a beautiful display for a single evening, while lightweight plastic versions offer a reusable alternative. FLIC Luminaries take a different approach: rigid, one-piece polymer construction designed for years of repeated outdoor use.

Whether you're comparing appearance, weather resistance, safety, cleanup, storage or long-term value, the differences are worth understanding.

FLIC Luminaries vs. Paper-Bag Luminarias

Paper-bag luminarias helped popularize the luminaria tradition across America. Their simple combination of a paper bag, sand and candle creates an informal, traditional appearance that remains popular today.

But paper has some obvious limitations outdoors.

Weather Makes a Big Difference

Rain, snow, ice and sprinkler systems can quickly weaken a paper bag. Once wet, the bag can collapse, leaving behind wet paper and the sand that was used to hold it in place.

FLIC Luminaries are made from rigid polymer and designed specifically for repeated outdoor use. Rain or snow doesn't destroy the luminary, and when the display is finished, the luminaries can be collected, nested and stored for another occasion.

More Lighting Choices

Traditional paper luminarias are commonly illuminated with candles. Anytime an open flame is used around paper, appropriate fire precautions are important.

FLIC Luminaries can also be used with candles, but customers have additional flameless lighting choices, including LED tea lights and electric light strings.

That flexibility is especially useful for large residential, neighborhood and commercial displays.

What Happens When Paper Gets Wet?

how to compare luminarias

Photo A: We gently sprayed both luminarias with a garden hose. The wet paper luminary collapsed while the FLIC Luminary retained its shape.

Photo B: We gripped the sides of the wet paper bag and prepared to lift it.

Photo C: As the weakened paper was lifted, the difference became obvious.

Photo D: Looking down into the FLIC Luminary, the sand remains contained inside the rigid luminary.

For a one-night display in perfect weather, paper may do the job. For customers who want to bring their display back year after year, FLIC offers a very different approach.

FLIC Luminaries vs. Lightweight Plastic Luminarias

Plastic luminarias vary considerably in construction. Many inexpensive versions use thin, flexible plastic designed to fold or collapse much like a paper bag.

FLIC Luminaries are different.

Heavy-Duty One-Piece Construction

FLIC Luminaries are injection molded from polyethylene polymer with walls approximately 1/8 inch thick. Their rigid, one-piece construction is designed to maintain its shape rather than fold or collapse for storage.

That substantial construction is one of the first differences customers notice when they handle a FLIC Luminary.

FLIC Luminaries are made for repeated seasonal use in demanding outdoor conditions. In fact, some of our earliest customers report that they are still using FLIC Luminaries purchased more than 20 years ago.

Strong Enough to Stand On

Our luminarias are so strong... you can stand on them!

Yes, they're that substantial.

A FLIC Luminary isn't a thin plastic bag made to resemble a paper luminaria. It is a rigid, injection-molded product designed for long-term use.

Rigid — But Still Easy to Store

Durability doesn't have to mean difficult storage.

FLIC Luminaries are engineered to nest inside one another, greatly reducing the amount of storage space required. We recommend keeping your original shipping carton and foam spacer so your luminaries can be stacked and stored together between uses.

Backed by a 10-Year Durability Warranty

We don't just describe FLIC Luminaries as durable—we back their construction with our 10-Year Luminary Durability Warranty for both residential and commercial use.

Built for Homes — and Much More

The same construction that works for a residential walkway also makes FLIC Luminaries suitable for much larger installations.

Over the years, FLIC Luminaries have been used for neighborhood displays, universities, botanical gardens, municipalities, businesses, commercial properties, special events and government installations.

From a dozen luminaries lining a driveway to large installations involving hundreds or thousands, the objective remains the same: a beautiful luminary that can be used again and again.

Compare the Difference

Paper luminarias have a wonderful traditional simplicity. Lightweight plastic luminarias offer another alternative. FLIC Luminaries were created for customers looking for something more permanent:

Rigid construction. Weather resistance. Reusable design. Compact nesting. Multiple lighting choices. And a 10-year durability warranty.
