There's something especially beautiful about luminaries glowing through freshly fallen snow. The combination of warm light, crisp winter air, and a blanket of white can transform an ordinary landscape into something magical.
But snow isn't particularly friendly to traditional luminarias. Paper bags and other lightweight decorations can struggle with snow, ice, rain, and winter wind.
FLIC Luminaries were built for weather like this.
Our durable, one-piece plastic luminaries are designed for repeated outdoor use in snow, rain, heat, and cold. So when winter weather arrives, you don't necessarily have to bring your luminaries inside—you may get one of the most beautiful displays of the season.
An 8-Inch Snowfall in Wichita
I'm located in Wichita, Kansas, where substantial snowfalls have become less frequent in recent years. But one fall, we were surprised—and I was delighted—by a sudden snowfall of about eight inches.
I hadn't put out my entire Christmas luminary display yet. But I did have a dozen FLIC Luminaries outside that I'd set up just after Halloween to replace my spooky Halloween luminaries.
Suddenly, those dozen luminaries were surrounded by fresh snow.
Naturally, I grabbed a camera.
White FLAME Bulbs in the Snow
The timing made the snowfall even more interesting because I was using our White FLAME LED bulbs.
These aren't ordinary flickering bulbs. Each FLIC FLAME bulb contains 39 independently controlled LEDs that work together to create an animated dancing-flame effect throughout the bulb.
Instead of a luminary display that remains visually static, the light moves. Each bulb performs its own flame dance, and when multiple luminaries are glowing together, the entire display seems to come alive.
Against fresh snow, the White FLAME bulbs created an especially striking effect. Their crisp white light blended beautifully with the snow, producing a clean, cool winter appearance while the dancing movement of the light kept the scene from feeling frozen or still.
The photographs were beautiful—but this was something that really needed video.

Luminaries That Don't Have to Hide From Winter
Of course, the beauty of a snowy display isn't very useful if the luminaries themselves can't tolerate winter weather.
That's one of the reasons FLIC Luminaries were created. They're made from durable, injection-molded polyethylene rather than paper, with one-piece construction designed for repeated seasonal outdoor use.
They're also backed by our 10-Year Luminary Durability Warranty.
Snow, rain, and cold don't have to end your luminary display. Sometimes the weather can become part of it.

Snow + Luminaries + Dancing Light
I've seen FLIC Luminaries used in all kinds of settings over the years, but there's still something special about seeing them surrounded by fresh snow.
The snow reflects the light. The white luminaries blend into the winter landscape. And the animated FLAME bulbs add movement to an otherwise quiet scene.
What began as an unexpected Wichita snowfall turned into one of those moments that demonstrates exactly why reusable outdoor luminaries can be so much fun.
Sometimes Mother Nature creates the best display for you.
